Overview

Regular dental examinations are a critical part of preventive health care. A routine examination is carried out every six months unless your dentist recommends otherwise — for example, if you have no dental issues you will normally be seen every 12 months.

What to expect at your appointment

At your routine examination the dentist carries out a full check of all your teeth, looking for decay, wear or any broken teeth. A full oral cancer check is also completed by examining your gums, tongue and the soft tissues of the mouth. If needed, bite-wing x-rays may be taken depending on when you last had them (normally every two years) or if there is decay under an existing filling.

The dentist also checks the glands in your neck and your temporomandibular joint at the side of your head. If treatment is required, the different options will be discussed with you.

Once treatment is agreed, you will be given a printed treatment plan detailing costs and asked to book any follow-up appointments. If no treatment is needed, the dentist will advise when you should next be seen.

Frequently asked questions

Why are regular check-ups important?

They allow early detection of cavities, checks for any signs of oral cancer, and the scheduling of any repairs or follow-up treatment before problems get worse.

What else can I ask about during a check-up?

A check-up is a great opportunity to raise any concerns you may have, such as sensitivity or teeth grinding, and to ask about recommended dental products.

I've missed my check-up window — what should I do?

Book a check-up as soon as you can. It doesn't matter that you have missed when your previous check-up was due.
