Overview

Dental anxiety is very common among patients, and we have ways to help you manage it. If you let us know you are anxious, we will allow extra time for your appointment. Being afraid to visit the dentist can lead to delaying or avoiding treatment, and we want to prevent that so it does not affect your oral health.

What to expect at your appointment

At your first appointment we will ask about your medical and dental history and your main concerns. We will explain what we are doing at every stage so you feel comfortable before we lie you back in the chair to look in your mouth.

Please ask any questions you have — we want your experience to be as comfortable as possible. You are also welcome to bring a friend or family member, as a familiar face can help you relax.

We never want your appointment to feel rushed, and we encourage you to ask questions so we can help with your anxiety. Extra time can always be added when booking, and if you need treatment we will talk you through the process.

All appointments will be with the same dentist, and we will try to have the same dental nurse with you, so you build up confidence over time. If you suffer from severe anxiety and need treatment, in some cases we can prescribe oral sedation to help you relax during the procedure; the dentist will discuss this with you before booking anything.

Oral sedation is available — please ask during your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

How can visiting the dentist reduce dental anxiety in the long run?

Regular check-ups, cleans and x-rays can prevent dental disease and help the dentist find any problems early, so that simpler, less invasive treatments are needed. We are here to help you get through your check-ups in a calm and safe environment.

Who can be affected by dental anxiety?

Dental anxiety can affect anyone at any age. It is important to take children to the dentist from an early age to prevent trauma from invasive treatment, which can trigger anxiety in later years.

What can help me manage my anxiety at the practice?

We will make your appointment as comfortable and relaxed as possible. It can help to take deep, regular breaths and focus on your breathing throughout. You can also listen to music during treatment and, when agreed with the dentist, raise your hand to take a break.
